The Hon. Edward A. Torpoco (Ret.) served as a judge for the San Francisco County Superior Court in California. Torpoco was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown on December 12, 2014, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Patrick J. Mahoney. He retired in 2021.
Prior to his appointment, Torpoco worked for eBay, Inc. He started as regulatory counsel in 2006, rising through the ranks to become its senior director in 2012. During his tenure there, Torpoco represented the company before state and federal regulators and law enforcement entities. He was also responsible for negotiating complex commercial deals and providing product counseling, and he provided legal counsel for the company’s international projects.
Torpoco earned a B.S. from Georgetown University. He then received a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1998.
After graduating from law school, Torpoco began his legal career as a law clerk for the Hon. Irma E. Gonzalez of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. He served in that capacity until 1999, at which time he became a deputy district attorney for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Torpoco moved to the Criminal Division of the United States Department of Justice in 2000. He spent the next two years as a trial attorney before becoming an Assistant United States Attorney in the Office of the United States Attorney, Northern District of California. Torpoco left the public sector in 2006.
His memberships have included the San Francisco La Raza Lawyers Association.
He is registered as a Democrat.
