Judge Drew A. Laughlin: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Drew A. Laughlin is a magistrate for the Beaufort County Summary Court in South Carolina.


The summary court presides over landlord/tenant hearings, summons and complaint cases (to claim disputed funds), claim and delivery cases (to reclaim property), and public sales of abandoned vehicles. Its magistrates also hear criminal and traffic cases, issue warrants and set bonds, and hold preliminary hearings and transfer cases for the county.


In addition to his judicial service, Laughlin is of counsel at Laughlin & Bowen, a law firm he co-founded in 1990. Before that, he spent time as a partner at Bowen, Smoot & Laughlin, a partner at Qualey, Laughlin & Qualey, and an attorney at the McNair Law Firm, where he represented small businesses in business filings, contracts, licensing, dispute resolution, and litigation.


Laughlin earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Virginia in 1974. He then completed a J.D. at the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1977. As a law student, he was involved with the South Carolina Law Review.


His memberships have included the Hilton Head Island Town Council. He has served as the Mayor of the Town of Hilton Head Island (2010 to 2014), and he has been involved with the Town of Hilton Head Island Design Review Board, the Town of Hilton Head Island Planning Commission, and the Hilton Head Plantation Property Owners Association.
