Judge Derek W. Hunt - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Derek W. Hunt is a judge for the Superior Court of Orange County in California. He was appointed by former Governor Pete Wilson on July 14, 1997, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of Judge James L. Smith.

Hunt attended Cornell University, where he earned a B.A. in political philosophy in 1965 and a J.D. in 1972.

He began his legal career in 1972, specializing in business law and entertainment litigation. He first worked as an associate at Mitchell, Silberberg and Knupp until 1976. He spent the next three years working as an associate at Troy, Malin and Pottinger before moving to Stradling, Yocca, Carlson and Rauth in 1980. He joined Troy and Gould in 1981, where he worked as an associate until his appointment to the Superior Court of Orange County in 1997.

After completing his undergraduate degree in 1965, Hunt worked in the Congressional Liaison Office of the Department of the Air Force. From 1967 to 1969, Hunt served as First Lieutenant in the United States Army. He was stationed in the Republic of Vietnam and the Federal Republic of Germany.

Hunt was born and raised in Washington, D.C. However, he spent part of his childhood in Contra Costa County, California.

Hunt is passionate about Shakespeare. He has read every play, is conversant with most of the lines, and has performed many of the roles. He has even organized judges to re-enact several Shakespearean plays, something that has become an annual summer event. Hunt also likes to read literature, academic histories, and philosophy.
