Biography

The Hon. Deborah A. Malphrus is a judge for the 14th Judicial Circuit Family Court of South Carolina. She was elected to the bench by the South Carolina General Assembly on May 25, 2011.


The 14th Judicial Circuit includes Allendale, Hampton, Jasper, Beaufort, and Colleton Counties.


Prior to her election, Malphrus was a managing attorney in the Ridgeland office of Moss, Kuhn & Fleming. Before joining the firm, she practiced alongside her father and brother at their family law firm.


Malphrus began her legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Carol Connor with the South Carolina Court of Appeals before becoming an assistant solicitor with the 14th Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office.


She received a B.S. in nursing from the University of South Carolina in 1987. Malphrus then completed a J.D. at the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1990. While a law student, she worked as a registered nurse at Baptist Medical Center and Lexington Medical Center and was a volunteer nurse at the Columbia Free Medical Clinic.


Malphrus served as a trustee of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and as a member of the Jasper County Recreation Advisory Board, the Jasper County ad hoc Committee, and the Jasper County Gopher Hill Festival Committee. She also sat on the Board of Directors of the Jasper County Department of Disabilities and Special Needs and the Palmetto Electric Cooperative and has been active with the Jasper County Bar Association.


Malphrus has provided pro bono legal assistance to residents in Jasper County and served as a judge for the Ney National Mock Trial Competitions at Furman University.


She is a mother of three children. In her free time, Malphrus enjoys camping, gardening, playing the piano, reading, and spending time at her mountain cabin.
