Biography

The Hon. David W. Nelmark is a judge for the 5th Judicial District Court of Iowa in Polk County. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Kim Reynolds in 2019.


The 5th Judicial District includes Adair, Adams, Clarke, Dallas, Decatur, Guthrie, Jasper, Lucas, Madison, Marion, Polk, Ringgold, Taylor, Union, Warren, and Wayne Counties.


Nelmark received a bachelor’s degree in rhetoric and advertising from Drake University in 1999. He then completed a J.D. at Stanford Law School in 2005. Nelmark was admitted to practice in Iowa (2005) and Minnesota (2006).


He began his legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals before entering private practice in 2006. During that time, he was a shareholder at Belin McCormick, P.C. (2006 to 2017) and a partner at Gislason & Hunter, LLP (2017 to 2019).


Nelmark is a past president of the American Mock Trial Association and the Polk County Bar Association. He has also actively served as a mock trial coach and judge and served on the Board of Directors of the Des Moines Social Club.


Nelmark attended Urbandale High School.
