Biography

The Hon. David Hittner (Ret.) is a senior judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. He was nominated to the bench by former President Ronald Reagan on April 22, 1986, filling a seat vacated by the Hon. George E. Cire. His nomination was confirmed by the United States Senate on June 6, 1986. He assumed senior status on November 11, 2004.


Over the course of his judicial career, Hittner has held assignments on the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit as well as the United States District Courts for the Southern District of New York and the District of Arizona.


Hittner earned a bachelor’s degree from New York University in 1961. He then completed a J.D. at New York University School of Law in 1964. He is licensed to practice in New York (1964) and Texas (1967).


After graduating from law school, Hittner enlisted in the United States Army. He served in that capacity until 1967, at which time he entered into private practice in Houston. He specialized in family law matters for the next eleven years. Then, in 1978, he was selected to serve as a judge for the 133rd District Court of Texas.


He is a recipient of the President's Award from the State Bar of Texas (1984), the Lola Wright Foundation Award from the Texas Bar Foundation (1985), the Civil Judge of the Year Award from the Association of Civil Trial and Appellate Specialists (1988), and the Samuel E. Gates Award from the American College of Trial Lawyers (1989).


Born in Schenectady, New York, Hittner was raised in Brooklyn, New York. His father, J. George Hittner, was an electrician and a member of the Freemasonry, and his mother, Sophie Moskowitz Hittner, was a bookkeeper. Hittner is also involved with the Freemasonry, including the Scottish Rite and Shrine.
