Judge David F. Bauman - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. David F. Bauman is a judge for the Vicinage 9 Superior Court in Monmouth County in New Jersey. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jon Corzine in 2008, becoming the first Asian-American judge in the county. Bauman was reappointed for tenure in 2015.

While on the bench, he was nominated by former Governor Chris Christie to the New Jersey Supreme Court in 2012, though the nomination was never held for confirmation by the Senate, thereby expiring in 2014.

During his judicial tenure, Bauman has held assignments in the Family (2008 to 2009), Civil (2009 to 2015 and 2021 to present), and Criminal (2015 to 2021) Divisions in Monmouth County. He also served as presiding judge of the Criminal and Civil Divisions.

Bauman received a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University in 1981. He went to complete a J.D. at Boston College Law School in 1986.

Bauman spent four years in active duty with the United States Marine Corps (1988 to 1991), serving as defense counsel, a prosecutor, and special counsel at courts-martial. He later served as a staff judge advocate, company commander, and appellate government counsel in the Marine Corps Reserve, holding the rank of Major. Bauman was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, Letter of Commendation, Commandant of the Marine Corps, and Certificate of Commendation, 2d Battalion, 25th Marines.

During his civilian legal career, he practiced as an attorney at Bressler, Amery & Ross, PC, where he was an equity partner at the time of his appointment to the bench. Bauman, who first joined the firm in 1991, was named a partner in 1998. While there, he specialized in complex civil and criminal matters and sat as a member of the firm’s Diversity Committee as well as the Supreme Court Civil Practice Committee.

He was named a “Diversity Advocate'' by Multicultural Magazine and received the Asian Pacific American Lawyers Association of New Jersey Achievement Award (2008) and the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Minority Judge’s Award.

Bauman identifies as Japanese-American.
