The Hon. David Byrd (Ret.) was a judge for the 23rd Judicial District Court of North Carolina. He was elected to the bench in 1994. Byrd retired in 2022.
The 23rd Judicial District includes Alleghany, Ashe, Wilkes, and Yadkin Counties.
Prior to his election, he worked as an assistant district attorney with the 23rd Judicial District since 1989. Before that, Byrd spent three years as a District Court magistrate (1983 to 1986).
He received a B.A. in political science from Appalachian State University in 1983. Byrd then completed a J.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law in 1989.
His daughter, Hon. Laura Luffman, was elected to fill his vacancy on the bench.
