The Hon. David A. Berchelmann, Jr. (Ret.) served as a judge for the 37th (Civil) District Court in Bexar County, Texas. Berchelmann was elected to the bench in 1992 and retired in 2013. He currently serves as a visiting judge for the Bexar County District Court. He also maintains a mediation practice at Naman, Howell, Smith & Lee.
Berchelmann began his judicial career as a judge for the 290th District Court in Bexar County, Texas. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Bill Clements in 1981. Then, in 1989, Governor Clements elevated Berchelmann to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. At that time, Berchelmann became the first Republican to serve on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in over a century. He presided in that capacity until 1990.
He earned a B.A. in history and government from St. Mary’s University in 1970. Three years later, he completed a J.D. at St. Mary's University School of Law.
After graduating from law school, Berchelmann joined the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office. He served as an assistant district attorney until 1980, eventually leaving to work as an associate at Thurmond & Clark.
Berchelmann has served as president of the Catholic Lawyers Guild. He has also sat on the boards of St. Mary’s University Alumni Association, the Downtown San Antonio YMCA, Alamo Kiwanis International, and the St. Mary’s Youth Drop-In Center.
Born and raised in San Antonio, Berchelmann is the son of an obstetrician.
He is registered as a Republican.
