Biography

Hon. Daniel A. O’Brien is judge for the Oakland County Probate Court in Michigan. He was elected to the bench in November 2008.

During his judicial tenure, O’Brien has served as presiding judge of estates and trusts.

Prior to his election, he handled general civil, criminal, and probate matters in private practice for thirteen years (1995 to 2008). Along with his practice, O’Brien served as a magistrate for the Fifty-Second District Court, Division Two (2001 to 2008).

Before that, he had worked as an assistant prosecutor with the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney in Oakland County (1991 to 1995) and was a former research attorney for the Michigan Court of Appeals (1988 to 1990), including for the Hon. Myron H. Wahls (1989 to 1990).

O’Brien received a B.S. in electrical engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1981. He then worked for four years as an electrical engineer for Texas Instruments (1981 to 1985) before completing a J.D. at the University of Detroit, Mercy School of Law in 1988.

His memberships have included the Oakland County Bar Association, the Michigan Probate Judges Association, and the Southeast Michigan Probate Judges Association.
