Biography

Hon. D. Jay Stewart is a judge for the Atlantic Judicial Circuit Superior Court in Georgia.

He was elected to the bench in 2006.


The Atlantic Judicial Circuit is comprised of Bryan, Evans, Liberty, Long, McIntosh, and Tattnall Counties.


During his judicial tenure, Stewart has presided over the Circuit’s Felony Drug Court, which he is credited with establishing in 2009.


In 2018, he was designated to serve in place of the Hon. Nels S. D. Peterson on the Supreme Court of Georgia in the appeal of New Cingular PCS, LLC et al v. Georgia Department of Revenue et al. The appeal revolved around a decision by the state’s Department of Revenue to deny a request for millions of dollars in sales tax refunds filed by New Cingular Wireless PCS, LLC.


Prior to his election to the bench, Stewart worked as a private practice attorney and was the former Solicitor-General for the Evans County State Court (1993 to 2005).


He received a B.S. from Georgia Southern University in 1986. Stewart went on to complete a J.D. at Mercer University, Walter F. George School of Law in 1991.


His memberships have included the Atlantic Judicial Circuit Bar Association (past president), the State Bar of Georgia (Board of Governors), and the Council of Superior Court Judges of Georgia, having served on its Pattern Jury Instruction Committee.


Stewart is a graduate of Pinewood Christian Academy. He and his wife, Teresa, have two children.
