Biography

Hon. Colleen O’Donnell is a judge for the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas (General Division) in Ohio. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor John Kasich in 2013 to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. John F. Bender (Ret.). O’Donnell was retained to the seat in 2014 and 2016.

She received a B.A. in political science from Miami University. O’Donnell went on to complete a J.D. at Case Western Reserve University School of Law.

Prior to joining the bench, her legal career included practicing as an associate with the Columbus law firm of Carpenter, Lipps & Leland LLP (2008 to 2013), serving as a law clerk for the Hon. Sara Lioi with the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, and working briefly as an assistant attorney general in the Consumer Protection Section of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. While in private practice, O'Donnell focused on litigation matters, including products liability and criminal defense. In addition, she practiced regulatory and administrative law matters before the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio and the Ohio Legislature.

After assuming the bench, O’Donnell has sat on the Ohio Supreme Court’s Commission on the Certification of Attorneys as Specialists and on the Common Pleas Court’s Personnel and Finance Committees.

Her memberships have included the Columbus Bar Association, the Ohio Women’s Bar Association, the Women Lawyers of Franklin County, the Ohio State Bar Association, and the Thomas J. Moyer American Inn of Court.

Her civic involvement included the Grandview Heights Public Library Foundation Board and Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Central Ohio. O’Donnell also served in Miami University’s Pre-Law Advisory Program.

She is the daughter of the Hon. Terrence O’Donnell (Ret.), former justice of the Ohio Supreme Court and judge of the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas.

O’Donnell is a native of Rocky River in Cuyahoga County.

In 2020, O’Donnell made an unsuccessful bid for election to the Ohio Tenth District Court of Appeals.
