Biography

Hon. Colleen M. Hastings is an associate judge for the Rhode Island District Court. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Donald Carcieri on October 22, 2010.


During her judicial tenure, Hastings has presided in the Second Divison of the District Court.


Prior to her appointment, she was a magistrate for the Rhode Island Family Court, where she presided over child support, custody, visitation, and domestic violence cases, as well as juvenile criminal cases.


Before joining the bench, Hastings was president and owner of the Family Law Center of Rhode Island. As such, she litigated family court cases, including divorce, child custody, domestic violence, and adoptions.


Her legal career also included serving as an assistant city solicitor for the City of Newport (1998 to 2008) and assistant legal counsel for the Office of the Majority Leader in the Rhode Island Senate (2006 to 2008).


She received a B.A. from the University of Rhode Island in 1985. Hastings went on to complete a J.D. at Suffolk University Law School in 1991.


Her memberships have included the Rhode Island Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, and the Newport County Bar Association (past president).


She received both the Pro Bono Publico Award and the Continuing Service Award from the Rhode Island Bar Association.


From a civic standpoint, Hastings has been involved with the Women’s Resource Center, Lucy’s Hearth, the Newport County YMCA, the Boys and Girls Club of Newport County, and St. Mary’s Church.


At the time of her appointment, Hastings resided in Newport, Rhode Island. She has three children.
