Hon. Christine S. Vertefeuille (Ret.) is a judge trial referee for the New Haven Judicial District Superior Court in Connecticut.
Vertefeuille sat as a justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court, a position in which she was appointed by former Governor John Rowland in 2000. She retired in 2010 and subsequently assumed senior status.
Before joining the state’s Supreme Court, Vertefeuille was a judge for the Connecticut Appellate Court (1999 to 2000). She served as the Administrative Judge of the Appellate System for six years beginning in 2000. Vertefeuille began her judicial career as a judge for the Superior Court in 1989. During her tenure there, she presided over the Connecticut silicone gel breast implant cases (1993 to 1999), was the Administrative Judge in the Waterbury District (1994 to 1999), and presided as a Complex Litigation judge (1999).
Prior to beginning her judicial career, Vertefeuille worked in private practice (1975 to 1989).
She received a B.A. in political science from Trinity College in 1972. Vertefeuille went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1975.
She was a member of the Executive Committee of the Real Property Section of the Connecticut Bar Association, the Cheshire Commission on Handicapped and Disabled, the Advisory Committee on Appellate Rules (co-chair), and the Fellows and Program Committee.
Vertefeuille also served as an alternate member of the Waterbury and New Haven Grievance Panels and was on the faculty of the Connecticut Judges’ Institute.
She received the Judicial Award from the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association (1995), the Tenth Anniversary Award from the Polish American Foundation of Connecticut (2006), and the Gatekeeper Award from “Common Good” (2004). Vertefeuille was also awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree from Quinnipiac University School of Law in 2006.
She was born in New Britain, Connecticut.
Vertefeuille is registered as a Democrat.
