The Hon. Carla Archie is a senior resident judge for the Mecklenburg County Superior Court in the 26th Judicial District of the 5th Division in North Carolina. She was elected to the bench in 2014.
Archie assumed the role of senior resident superior court judge for the 26th Judicial District in 2021, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. W. Robert Bell. She presides over felony criminal matters, civil matters over $25,000, and misdemeanor appeals from the Mecklenburg County District Court and other counties. Archie first presided as a judge in the 26B Judicial District of the 7th Division prior to its combining with the 5th Division when the North Carolina General Assembly revised the districts in 2018.
Before her election, Archie was senior counsel for Wells Fargo & Company since 2008. She began the position after serving for two years as general counsel for the North Carolina Education Lottery (2006 to 2008). Archie also handled commercial litigation matters as vice president and assistant general counsel for Wachovia Corporation (2002 to 2006). She began her legal career as a prosecutor with the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office in 1995 and was later elevated to Chief Assistant District Attorney over felony drug prosecutions.
Archie received a B.S. in accounting from Hampton University in 1992. She then completed a J.D. at William & Mary Law School (1995) and an LL.M. in judicial studies from Duke University School of Law (2020).
She is a member of the Junior League of Charlotte; the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; The Links, Inc.; and Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.
Archie was named Outstanding Judge of the Year by the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys in 2022. She also received the Julius Chambers Diversity Champion Award from the Mecklenburg County Bar (2019), the Citizen Lawyer Award from the William & Mary Law School (2016), the Marguerite Adams Political Action Award from the Mid-Atlantic Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (2015), and the Outstanding Alumna Award from Hampton University (2012).
Archie hails from Danville, Virginia, where her mother served as the mayor.
She is registered as a Democrat.
