Biography

The Hon. Carl J. Nichols is a district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. He was nominated to the bench by former President Donald Trump on June 7, 2018. Nichols was confirmed by the United States Senate on May 22, 2019, and received his judicial commission on June 25, 2019.


Prior to his nomination, he was a partner at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale & Dorr, LLP since 2010. Before joining the firm, Nichols spent four years with the United States Department of Justice. He joined the Department in 2005, serving first as a deputy attorney general in the Civil Division and later as the principal deputy associate attorney general. Nichols was also in private practice as a partner at Boies, Schiller & Flexner, LLP, where he began after completing his clerkships.


He received a B.A. in philosophy from Dartmouth College in 1992. Nichols then completed a J.D. at the University of Chicago Law School in 1996.


After graduating from law school, he began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Laurence H. Silberman with the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia and the Hon. Clarence Thomas with the Supreme Court of the United States.


Nichols was born in Rhinebeck, New York.
