Judge Barry D. Peterson: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Barry D. Peterson is a magistrate judge for the Vermont Superior Court. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Peter Shumlin in 2012.


Peterson has held assignments in the Family Divisions in Chittenden, Franklin, Grand Isle, Lamoille, and Orleans Counties. He was serving as an acting family magistrate on an as-needed basis prior to his appointment. Peterson was also an acting judge in Lamoille County, where he handled small claims cases.


In addition to serving on the bench, he practiced alongside his wife, Lori J. Ruple, at Peterson & Ruple in Jericho since 1988. At the firm, he handled family law, real estate, small business, bankruptcy, and personal injury matters. Peterson was also a cooperating attorney with Vermont Legal Aid/Law Line of Vermont. As such, he assisted individuals in bankruptcy cases and served as a Guardian ad Litem in family law cases.


Peterson received a bachelor’s degree from Pace University in 1980. He then completed a J.D. at Vermont Law School in 1985.


He and his wife have two grown children. Peterson spent time as a youth sports coach and served as a member of the Fletcher Elementary School Board.
