Judge Barbara Hanson Nellermoe: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Barbara Hanson Nellermoe (Ret.) served as a judge for the 45th (Civil) District Court in Bexar County, Texas. Nellermoe was elected to the bench in 2002 and re-elected in 2006 and 2010. She retired at the conclusion of her term in 2014.


Prior to her election, Nellermoe was corporation counsel for Clear Channel Worldwide, a position to which she was named in 2000. Before that, she spent time as a coordinator staff attorney for the Texas Fourth Court of Appeals (1994 to 2000).


Nellermoe earned a B.S. from Concordia College (1965) and an M.A. from Minnesota State University (1976). Then, in 1983, she completed a J.D. at St. Mary's University School of Law. As a law student, she was selected Editor-in-Chief of the St. Mary's Law Journal.


After graduating from law school, Nellermoe began her legal career as a briefing attorney at the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas. She worked in that capacity until 1985, at which time she entered into private practice as an associate at Martin, Shannon & Drought (1985 to 1988) and a managing partner at Shannon & Weidenbach (1988 to 1991).


Her memberships have included the Bexar County Women's Political Caucus, the Texas Bar Foundation, the San Antonio Bar Association, and the William S. Sessions American Inn of Court. She sat on the Facilities Committee, the Children's Court Oversight Committee, and the Local Rules Committee of the Bexar County Juvenile Board. She has also served as president of the Bexar County Women's Bar Association, president of St. John's Lutheran Church, and director of Friends of the San Antonio Public Library.


She is a recipient of the Belva Lockwood Outstanding Lawyer Award from the San Antonio Lawyer, the President's Award for Outstanding Service to the Bar from the Bexar County Women's Bar Association, and the Political Advocacy Award from the Stonewall Democrats of Bexar County.


Nellermoe was born in Vancouver, Washington.
