Judge April A. Newbauer: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. April A. Newbauer is an acting justice for the New York County Supreme Court in the 1st Judicial District of New York. She was appointed to the position by Chief Administrative Judge Lawrence K. Marks in 2020.


The 1st Judicial District encompasses New York County. Newbauer has held an assignment in the Criminal Term of the Supreme Court.


Newbauer began her judicial career as a judge for the New York State Court of Claims, following her appointment to the bench by former Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2012. That same year, she was then designated to serve as an acting justice for the Criminal Term of the Bronx County Supreme Court by Chief Administrative Judge A. Gail Prudenti.


Prior to her appointment to the bench, Newbauer worked for the Legal Aid Society. She started as a supervising attorney in its Harlem Office in 1991. Then, in 1997, she became the attorney-in-charge of its Queens Civil Practice. Newbauer has also worked as an associate at Harman, Ule, Rose & Ratner, a staff attorney at MFY Legal Services, and a law clerk to the Hon. Elliott Wilk of the New York State Supreme Court.


Newbauer earned a B.A. from Cornell University in 1979. She then completed a J.D. at New York University School of Law in 1983.


She has served on the Criminal Justice Operations Committee of the New York City Bar.
