On March 25, 2011, her treatment of defendants in drug court became the subject of an episode of This American Life. Following its release, an ethics probe was launched by the Georgia Judicial Qualifications Commission, as the episode claimed she imposed indefinite jail terms and other excessively punitive sentences on drug court participants. The ethics charges against Williams were dropped upon her resignation from the bench.

Williams earned a B.F.A. (1969) and an M.Ed. in speech language pathology (1970) from the University of Georgia. She then completed a J.D. at Atlanta's John Marshall Law School in 1977. She was licensed to practice in Georgia (1977).

After graduating from law school, Williams began her legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. William R. Killian of the Brunswick Judicial Circuit Superior Court. She worked in that capacity until 1979, at which time she became an assistant district attorney with the Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office. Then, in 1980, she entered into private practice.
