The Hon. Alfred C. Harrell (Ret.) served as a judge for the Denver County Court in Colorado. Harrell was appointed to the bench by former Mayor Federico Peña in 1985. He retired on June 30, 2016.
Harrell earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado in 1966. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law in 1971.
After graduating from law school, Harrell entered into private practice alongside his father in Denver.
His memberships have included the Board of Trustees of the American Inn of Court. He was instrumental in establishing five American Inns of Court in Colorado, serving as a Master of the Bench in the Robert C. Rhone–Ava M. Brackett American Inn of Court as well as an Emeritus Member of the Judge William E. Doyle American Inn of Court.
He is a recipient of the American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the Tenth Circuit (2018), the Sam Cary King Trimble Lifetime Achievement Award (2015), and the Award of Merit from the Colorado Bar Association (2020).
Harrell is the step-son of Irving Andrews. Andrews played a prominent role in the civil rights movement, serving on the legal defense team for Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka Kansas. After retiring from the bench, Harrell and a colleague founded the Symposium on Race, a monthly conversation group among concerned citizens about matters relating to race and class issues in the United States.
