Judge Alan T. Heavens: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

The Hon. Alan T. Heavens is a judge for the 1st Judicial District Court of Iowa. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Kim Reynolds in 2019.

The 1st Judicial District includes the Allamakee, Black Hawk, Buchanan, Chickasaw, Clayton, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Grundy, Howard, and Winneshiek counties.

Heavens has served as the administrative judge for Allamakee County and Clayton County.

He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of St. Thomas in 2007. Heavens then completed a J.D. at the University of St. Thomas School of Law in 2010.

He spent the bulk of his legal career as the Clayton County Attorney, assuming the role in 2010. Heavens also handled civil litigation, family law, real estate, estate planning, probate disputes, contracts, and personal injury matters as a partner at a local law firm.

He is a past president of the Clayton County Bar Association and a member of the Iowa Judges Association and the Iowa State Bar Association.

Heavens is married and has four children.
