Judge Tanya Brinkley - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Tanya Brinkley is a judge for the 11th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in Miami-Dade County. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Ron DeSantis on March 27, 2019, filling a vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. Bronwyn Miller to the Florida Third District Court of Appeal.

Prior to her appointment, Brinkley was a judge for the Miami-Dade County Court, a position to which she was elected in 2012.

Brinkley earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Howard University in 1991. She spent the next few years working in the insurance and financial services industries before completing a J.D. at the University of Miami School of Law in 1995. As a law student, Brinkley interned for the Miami-Dade County Office of the Public Defender; the Law Firm of Pitts, Handfield & Valentine; and the Hon. Donald Graham of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

After graduating from law school, Brinkley entered into private practice, working as a sole practitioner before becoming a partner at Brinkley & Henrys. She litigated complex criminal, family and civil law matters. Brinkley supplemented her practice with service as a traffic magistrate for the Miami-Dade County Court (2004 to 2012).

Her memberships have included the American Bar Association, Cuban American Bar Association, the Dade County Bar Association, the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Florida Association of Women Lawyers, and the Wilkie D. Ferguson Black Lawyers Association. She also sat on the City of Miami Civilian Review Board, the City of Miami Asset Review Board, and the Florida Bar Traffic Rules Committee.

She is a recipient of the Ray H. Pearson Guardian Ad Litem Pro Bono Award (2009), the Wilkie D. Ferguson Bar Association Pro Bono Award (2010), and the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association Community Pillar Award (2019).

Brinkley was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
