Judge Spencer Eig - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Spencer Eig is a judge for the 11th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in Miami-Dade County. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jeb Bush in 2005.

During his judicial tenure, Eig has presided in the Civil and Probate Divisions.

He received a B.A. in foreign affairs from the University of Virginia in 1982. Eig then completed a J.D. at the University of Georgia School of Law in 1985.

In 1988, he briefly served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Columbia. He also served with the Office of the Presidential Transition at the White House during that same year. The following year, Eig became an attorney with the United States Department of Justice, a position he would hold until 1999. During his tenure there, he spent three years as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana (1991 to 1994).

Following his time as a federal prosecutor, Eig entered into solo practice at his own law firm. His areas of practice included criminal, immigration, labor and employment, and personal injury cases. He remained in private practice until his appointment to the Circuit Court.

His professional memberships have included The Florida Bar and the Bar Association of the District of Columbia.

From a civic standpoint, Eig has served as chairman of the Miami Beach Police-Citizens Relations Committee and the Agudath Israel of South Florida Commission on Civic Action. He was also a member of the Miami Beach Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, the Dade County Zoning Appeals Board, the Miami Beach Youth Center Advisory Committee, and a past president of the Emerging Wisdom School in North Miami Beach.
