Judge Shawndya L. Simpson - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Shawndya L. Simpson is a Justice for the Bronx County Supreme Court (Criminal Term) in the Twelfth Judicial District of New York. Simpson was initially elected to the Kings County Supreme Court in 2017. Then, in 2018, she was transferred to the Bronx County Supreme Court.

Simpson began her judicial career as a judge for the Civil Court of the City of New York in New York County, a position to which she was elected in 2004 and 2014. Shortly after her initial election to the bench, Simpson was designated to the Criminal Court of the City of New York in New York County by Chief Administrative Judge Ann Pfau. She presided in that capacity until 2011, when she was designated to the Kings County Supreme Court.

Prior to her election to the bench, Simpson served in the Office of the District Attorney of Kings County. She entered as an assistant district attorney in 1991, rising through the ranks to become deputy bureau chief and bureau chief of the Felony Trial Unit in 1999 and 2001.

During her tenure in the Office of the District Attorney, Simpson performed a brief stint as an assistant attorney general for the New York State Office of the Attorney General from 1994 to 1995, where she prosecuted cases in the Real Estate Financing Bureau.

Simpon has worked as a legal commentator and analyst for MSNBC, The Fox News Channel, Geraldo, Court TV, and Power of Attorney. She was also a Professor of Law and American Society and Information Science at the College of New Rochelle and Visiting Professor of Law at Emory University.

Simpson earned a B.S. in information sciences from the University of Pittsburgh in 1987. She then continued her studies at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where she received a J.D. in 1990.

She is registered as a Democrat.
