Judge O. Peter Sherwood - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. O. Peter Sherwood is a Justice for the New York County Supreme Court in the First Judicial District of New York. He was certificated to the bench in 2016.

Sherwood began his judicial career as a judge for the New York State Court of Claims, a position to which he was appointed by former Governor David A. Paterson in 2008. Shortly after this appointment, Sherwood was designated Acting Justice for the Commercial Division of the New York County Supreme Court by Chief Administrative Judge Ann Pfau. Then, in 2015, he was appointed to the Kings County Supreme Court by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

He earned a B.A. from Brooklyn College in 1968. Three years later, the completed a J.D. at New York University School of Law.

After graduating from law school, Sherwood served as a law secretary for the Hon. Fritz W. Alexander, II of the Civil Court of the City of New York. Three years later, he left the Civil Court of the City of New York at joined the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. He worked as an assistant counsel there for the next ten years.

In 1984, Sherwood moved to the New York State Office of the Attorney General. He entered as a deputy solicitor general, rising through the ranks to become its Solicitor General in 1986. He then left the Office of the Attorney General in 1991, accepting a position as corporation counsel for the New York City Law Department.

Then, in 1994, Sherwood entered into private practice. He worked as a partner in the litigation department at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips for the next fourteen years.

He has taught as an adjunct assistant professor at New York University School of Law and as visiting professor at CUNY School of Law.

His memberships have included the House of Delegates for the New York State Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association Inns of Court, the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, the National Bar Association, the Metropolitan Black Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, and the American Arbitration Association Commercial Panel. He has also served as a member of the New York City Procurement Policy Board and the New York State Ethics Commission. He was also the director and secretary of the Center for Employment Opportunity and the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Development Corporation.

Sherwood was born in Jamaica and raised in Brooklyn.
