Judge Loren Baily-Schiffman - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Loren Baily-Schiffman is an Acting Justice of the Kings County Supreme Court, Civil Term in the Second Judicial District of New York. She was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2009. Prior to sitting on the Supreme Court, Justice Baily-Schiffman had been elected to three terms as a judge of the Civil Court of the City of New York in Kings County beginning in 1999.

Justice Baily-Schiffman received her B.A. from Oberlin College in 1973. She went on to earn her J.D. from New York Law School in 1977.

Prior to her election to the Kings County Civil Court, Baily-Schiffman had practiced briefly as an attorney at the Brooklyn Branch of Legal Services beginning in 1997. While at Legal Services, she handled cases involving public benefits and housing. Before joining Legal Services, she practiced as a sole practitioner at her own law firm from 1982 to 1987. At her law firm, Baily-Schiffman specialized in employment and housing discrimination, civil rights, and tenant representation.

Early in her legal career, she worked as an education law specialist for the New Rochelle Community Action Agency.

While on the Supreme Court, Justice Baily-Schiffman has presided over guardianship hearings. She has also presided over criminal court arraignments, personal injury and police use of force cases as well as contract disputes.

Justice Baily-Schiffman was born in Queens, New York.
