Judge Lody Jean - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Lody Jean is a judge for the 11th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in Miami-Dade County. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Ron DeSantis in 2020, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. John Schlesinger.

Prior to her appointment, Jean was a judge for the Miami-Dade County Court, a position to which she was named by former Governor Rick Scott in 2018. Before that, she worked as a sole practitioner in her own private practice, where she specialized in immigration, deportation, and criminal defense matters. She also spent time as an assistant state attorney in the Miami-Dade County State Attorney's Office, rising through the ranks to become Chief of its Felony Division (2004 to 2012).

Jean earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and international studies from the University of Miami. She then completed a J.D. at St. Thomas University College of Law. As a law student, Jean worked with LSGMI on the Haitian Citizenship Project for individuals needing assistance applying for naturalization. She also interned at the Third District Court of Appeal, the Miami-Dade County Public Defender’s Office, and the Broward State Attorney’s Office.

Her memberships have included the Haitian American Chamber of Commerce of Florida, the Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center, and the Miami Children’s Corporation. She has also served as president of the Haitian Lawyers Association.

Born in Port-au-Prince to a Haitian father and a Lebanese mother, Jean became the first Haitian-American woman to serve on the Miami-Dade County Court and the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court.
