Judge Joseph Risi - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Joseph Risi is an acting justice of the Queens County Supreme Court (Civil Term) in the Eleventh Judicial District of New York. Risi was initially appointed to the New York State Court of Claims by Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2017. Later that year, he was designated to the Queens County Supreme Court by Chief Administrative Judge Lawrence K. Marks.

Risi earned a B.A. in government from St. John’s University in 1978. He then completed a J.D. at Widener University School of Law in 1982.

After graduating from law school, Risi began his legal career as a principal law assistant for the New York State Unified Court System in 1983. Five years later, he entered into private practice, working as the principal of Risi & Associate for the next thirty years.

While in private practice, Risi served as the Deputy Superintendent of the New York State Insurance Department (2005 to 2007) and as counsel to Senator George Onorato of the New York State Senate (1988 to 2010).

Risi has served as president of the Queens County Bar Association and the Long Island City Lawyer. His other memberships have included the Queens Aviation Advisory Committee, the Columbian Lawyers Association, the House of Delegates of the New York State Bar Association, and the United States Selective Service System.

Over the course of his legal career, he has also been actively involved with the Second Judicial Department of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, where he served on its Grievance Committee, Character & Fitness Committee, and Attorney/Client Disputes Committee. He also volunteered as counsel to Sharing & Caring and the United Civic Community Association.

Risi was born in Astoria, New York. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he was the chairman of Community Board 1, which represents the Astoria, Long Island City, and Queensbridge areas.
