Biography

The Hon. John J. Curry, Jr. is a Circuit Judge for the Illinois Circuit Court of Cook County. He was elected to the bench in 2014. Judge Curry is currently assigned to the Tax & Miscellaneous Remedies of the Law Division (Calendar 3).

Curry earned a B.A. in Political Science and History from Northwestern University in 1974. and completed his J.D. at the Vanderbilt University Law School in 1978.

After graduating from law school, Curry joined the Office of the Illinois Attorney General where he worked for two years as an Assistant Attorney General in the Special Litigation Section of the Law Division. In 1983, he relocated to Washington, D.C., to serve as a trial attorney in the Special Litigation Section of the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice. He returned to Chicago in 1987 and went into private practice, specializing in business and commercial litigation. He worked as an attorney at Katten Muchin & Zavis from 1987 to 1990, and as a sole practitioner (John J. Curry, Attorney at Law) from 1990 to 1998. He also served as a Special Assistant Attorney General from the State of Illinois from 1995 to1998. He was a partner at Nasharr & Shea from 1998 to 2006 and a shareholder at Polsinelli (formerly Polsinelli Shughart P.C.) from 2006 until his election in 2014.

He is a founder of the Chicago Lawyers Division of the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy, and his memberships have included the American Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, the Cook County Republican Central Committee, the National Republican Lawyers Association, the City Club of Chicago, and the University Club of Chicago.

A third-generation Chicago Republican, Curry is a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and the grandson of the late Chicago Police Captain William Burke.
