Judge John A. Barone - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. John A. Barone (Ret.) was a justice of the Bronx County Supreme Court in the Twelfth Judicial District of New York. He was elected to the Supreme Court in 2001. Barone retired in 2015 and became a private mediator and arbitrator.

While on the Supreme Court, he served as the presiding judge of the Commercial Part in Bronx County from 2012 to 2015. Barone began his judicial career as a judge for the Civil Court of the City of New York in 1992.

He received a B.A. from Fordham University in 1970. Barone went on to earn a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1973.

After law school, he became assistant counsel with the New York City Department of City Planning in 1974. Barone then entered into private practice, where he specialized in corporate and commercial litigation. After practicing with several firms, he entered into solo practice in 1991. Barone also served as a law secretary to the Hon. Harold Silverman with the Bronx County Supreme Court (1983 to 1988).

Barone served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was honorably discharged in 1980 and held the rank of Captain.
