Judge Jan M. Alexander - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Jan M. Alexander is an associate judge for the Baltimore County Circuit Court in the Third Judicial Circuit of Maryland. She joined the bench in June 2010.

Alexander began her judicial career as an associate judge for the Baltimore County District Court in the Eighth District in 2002.

Prior to joining the bench, she spent fourteen years as an assistant state’s attorney in Baltimore City (1988 to 2002). During her tenure there, Alexander held assignments in the District Court Division (1988 to 1989) and Sex Offense Division (1989 to 1996) and also served as the Supervisor of Operations of the Central Booking and Intake Center (1996 to 1997), Trial Supervisor of the General Felony Division (1997 to 1999), and Division Chief of the Misdemeanor Trial Division (1999 to 2002).

She also spent time in private practice as an associate at Fugett & Hitchcock, P.A. (1987 to 1988).

She received a B.A. in political science from Morgan State University in 1982. Alexander went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Maryland, Francis King Carey School of Law in 1985.

After graduating from law school, she served for two years as a law clerk and bailiff with the Baltimore City Orphans’ Court, pending her admittance to the Maryland Bar in 1987.

Her memberships have included the Maryland State Bar Association, the Baltimore County Bar Association, the Maryland State Attorney’s Association, the Trial Table Law Club, the Harry A. Cole Judicial Council, and the Monumental City Bar Association.

Alexander also sat as a member of the Benchbook Revision Oversight Committee and was panel chair for the Health Claims Arbitration Office.

She was involved with the Olde Mill Estates Growth Association, the Liberty Road Recreational Council (Little League Baseball coach), and the Family Bereavement Center (CASA volunteer).

She is also a member of Shrine of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church.

Alexander was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and is a graduate of Randallstown Senior High School.
