Judge James L. Miraldi - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. James L. Miraldi is a judge for the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas (General Division) in Ohio. He was elected to the bench in November 2006.

During his tenure on the Court of Common Pleas, Miraldi is credited with creating the Lorain County Wellness Court (Mental Health Court). The specialty court, which was certified by the Ohio Supreme Court, serves as a two-year comprehensive rehabilitation program for those suffering from various mental health disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, and severe depression. The court receives assistance from multiple agencies, including the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office and county jail, the Lorain Adult Probation Department, the Lorain County Prosecutor’s, and mental health and substance abuse treatment providers.

Miraldi received a B.A. in history from the College of Wooster in 1973. He went on to complete a J.D. at Duke University School of Law in 1977.

Prior to joining the judiciary, Miraldi practiced for twenty-nine years at Miraldi & Barrett Co., LPA, where his father was also an attorney.

When not presiding on the bench, he enjoys playing guitar to raise money for Music on a Mission. To do so, he plays at a local venue, located in a barn in Avon Lake, called Barnegie Hall.

Miraldi is a lifelong resident of Lorain and a graduate of Lorain High School. His cousin, the Hon. John R. Miraldi, also presides as a judge on the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas.

He and his wife, Karen, have two children.
