Judge Francis A. Kahn, III - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Francis A. Kahn, III is an Acting Justice of the New York County Supreme Court, Civil Term in the First Judicial District of New York. He was designated to serve as an Acting Justice of the Bronx County Supreme Court, Civil Term in 2018 by the Hon. Lawrence K. Marks, Chief Administrative Judge of the State of New York and was then assigned to New York County during that same year. His judicial career began in 2018 when he was initially appointed to serve as a judge for the New York State Court of Claims by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Justice Kahn received his B.S. from St. John’s University in 1992. He went on to earn his J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law in 1995.

Before his appointment to the bench, Kahn had worked with the New York State Unified Court System since 1998. During his twenty-year tenure there, he served as a New York State Supreme Court law clerk (1998 to 2003) and principal law clerk (2003 to 2011) as well as a principal law clerk for the Queens County Surrogate’s Court (2011 to 2018).

Prior to joining the Unified Court System, he practiced as an associate with the firm Shafran and Mosley P.C. from 1995 to 1998.

Justice Kahn’s memberships have included the Queens County Bar Association, the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Queens County, and the Queens County Women’s Bar Association. He also served as a co-vice chair of the Surrogate’s Court Trusts and Estates Committee.
