Judge Donald J. Cannava, Jr. - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Donald J. Cannava, Jr. is a judge for the Miami-Dade County Court in Florida. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Rick Scott in 2011.

Cannava has held assignments as the Associate Administrative Judge for the Domestic Violence Division. He is also cross-designated as a judge for the Miami-Dade County Circuit Court, where he presides over criminal cases, civil injunction hearings, and the Domestic Violence Drug Court.

Prior to his appointment, Cannava was the Deputy Statewide and Regional Director for the Florida Department of Children and Families, a position to which he was named in 2008. Before that, he spent time as Senior Vice President of Legal Affairs for Passport Marine (2006 to 2008) and Senior Vice President of Inktel Direct Corporation (2001 to 2006).

Cannava earned a bachelor’s degree from Boston College in 1990. He then completed a J.D. at Boston College Law School in 1993.

After graduating from law school, Cannava began his legal career as an assistant state attorney with the Office of the State Attorney for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit. He served in that capacity until 1996, at which time he became a junior agent for the United Talent Agency (1996 to 2000) and the manager of business development for CBS Sportsline (2000 to 2001).

He is a recipient of the Robert L. Shevin Public Service Award.
