Judge Bruce E. Petit - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Bruce E. Petit is a judge for the Boone County Superior Court in Indiana. He was elected to the bench on November 4, 2014, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Rebecca S. McClure (Ret.).

Petit hears criminal, civil, and traffic infraction matters and has exclusive jurisdiction over small claims cases.

Prior to his election, he managed his own private practice, having established the firm after graduating from law school. In addition, Petit handled major felonies and all juvenile cases as a part-time chief deputy prosecutor with the Boone County Prosecutor’s Office (1989 to 2005) until the position transitioned to full-time in 2005. He continued in the full-time position while maintaining his law practice until his election to the bench.

Petit also worked as a deputy prosecutor in Hamilton County (1982 to 1988), where he prosecuted major felony crimes.

He received a B.S. in agricultural economics from Purdue University in 1978. Petit went on to complete a J.D. at Indiana University, Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 1982.

He served on the Boone County School Community Committee and the School Safety Commission for Boone County and has been involved with the Boone County Circuit Court’s Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative team.

Petit has also helped teach classes for local reserve law enforcement officers and speaks at local schools to educate students on the law and ways to avoid negative situations.

He and his wife, Kelly, have two grown children.

Petit is registered as a Republican.
