Judge Barry R. Ostrager - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Barry R. Ostrager is a justice for the Commercial Division of the New York County Supreme Court (Civil Term) in the First Judicial District of New York. He was initially appointed to the New York State Court of Claims by Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2015. At that time, he was also designated as an acting justice of the New York County Supreme Court. Then, in 2017, Governor Cuomo appointed him as a justice to the New York County Supreme Court.

Ostrager earned a B.A. and an M.A. from the City College of the City University of New York. He then completed a J.D. from the New York University School of Law.

Prior to his appointment to the bench, Ostrager was a senior partner at Simpson, Tacher & Bartlett. He entered the firm as an associate, rising through the ranks to become a partner in 1980. Nineteen years later, he became the chair of the firm’s litigation department, responsible for supervising the firm’s insurance practices in its New York and Los Angeles offices.

His memberships have included The City Bar, the New York County Lawyers’ Association, the New York State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the American Law Institute, the Federal Bar Council, and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers.

He has served as director of Sanctuary for Families at Temple Emanuel.
