Judge Ariana Fajardo Orshan - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Ariana Fajardo Orshan (Ret.) was a judge for the 11th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in Miami-Dade County. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Rick Scott in 2012. Fajardo Orshan retired in 2018.

She retired from the bench after receiving a nomination from former President Donald Trump to serve as the United States Attorney with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, becoming the first woman confirmed by the United States Senate to lead the office. She was sworn into office in September 2018. Fajardo Orshan served in this position until resigning due to the change in the Presidential administration in 2021. Among some of her accomplishments during her two-year tenure as United States Attorney, she touted the guilty verdict and life sentence of drug cartel leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, which was obtained while under her watch.

Fajardo Orshan received a B.S. from Florida International University. She went on to complete a J.D. at Nova Southeastern University, Shepard Broad College of Law in 1996.

After law school, Fajardo Orshan joined the Office of the State Attorney for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit, where she served as an assistant state attorney until 2002. While there, she specialized in the prosecution of cases involving narcotics and organized crime. Upon her departure from the State Attorney’s Office, Fajardo Orshan entered into private practice as a partner at Orshan & Fajardo, P.A. in 2003. She remained with the firm until her appointment to the Circuit Court bench.

In addition, she taught as an adjunct professor at Florida International University College of Law.

Fajardo Orshan, a native of Miami, Florida, is married to Robert D. Orshan.
