The Hon. Tracie L. Brown is an associate justice of the First District Court of Appeal in California. She was first appointed to the Superior Court of San Francisco County on May 21, 2013, by former governor Jerry Brown. She was then elevated to the First District Court of Appeal on November 21, 2018, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Timothy A. Reardon.
Brown earned a B.A. in English and American literature from Harvard University in 1992. She then received a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1996.
Brown began her legal career as a law clerk for Morrison and Foerster. Then, in 1997, she joined Cooley Godward Kronish. As an associate in its litigation department, she handled intellectual property, trade regulation, and general business cases. She took a temporary leave of absence from the firm in 1998 in order to serve as a law clerk for the Hon. M. Margaret McKeown of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Brown joined the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of California in 2002. She spent the next eleven years handling civil and criminal cases as an assistant U.S. Attorney, where she specialized in the prosecution of white-collar crimes.
Brown received the Jack Berman Award for Distinguished Service to the Profession and the Public from the California State Bar in 2002. She also received the Joe Morozumi Award for Exceptional Legal Advocacy from the Asian American Bar Association in 2003.
Brown, who identifies as half Japanese, taught English in Japan before attending law school.
