Biography

The Hon. Tony L. Richardson is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Jerry Brown in December of 2012. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of Michael A. Latin.

He is a registered Democrat.

Judge Richardson graduated cum laude with his B.A. in government from Harvard University in 1979. He went on to earn his J.D. from Stanford University School of Law in 1984.

After graduating from law school, Richardson clerked for the Hon. David W. Williams with the U.S. District Court of the Central District of California from 1984-1985. He left his clerkship to join the law firm of Hufstedler, Miller, Carlson, and Beardsley as an associate. Then in 1989, Richardson joined Gronemeier, Barker, and Huerta as an associate. After a year with the firm, Richardson became an associate for Kirkland and Ellis, LLP. In 1994 he was named a partner for the firm. He practiced for 17 years at Kirkland and Ellis, LLP. In 2008 he became a litigation partner for Reed Smith, LLP. In 2010 he joined SNR Denton US, LLP as a litigation and arbitration partner. He was still practicing for the firm at the time of his appointment to the Superior Court.

While in private practice, Richardson excelled in complex litigation involving insurance, class action suits, and unfair business practices in both the federal and state courts.

Some of his memberships have included the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, and the California Commission on Access to Justice.

He was a guest speaker at Jenner & Block for their 2014 Diversity & Inclusion Committee speaker series.
