Biography

The Hon. Tomar Mason (Ret.) served as a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. She was initially appointed to the Municipal Court of San Francisco by former governor George Deukmejian in 1990. She was then elevated to the superior court after the unification of superior and municipal courts in 1998. She retired from the bench on December 31, 2011.

Mason earned a B.A. from Michigan State University. She then received a J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1977.

She began her legal career in 1978. She first worked as a deputy district attorney for the Office of the District Attorney of Fresno County. Then, in 1986, she joined the County of Santa Clara as Deputy County Counsel, a position she briefly held before joining the Office of the District Attorney of Santa Clara County the following year. Then, from 1987 to 1990, Mason served as a deputy attorney general for the Office of the Attorney General of the State of California. She held this position until her appointment to the bench.

Mason has been a member of the American Correctional Association, California Women Lawyers, the National Association of Women Judges, the California Association of Drug Court Professionals, as well as California Health Right 360.

She has served as president of the National Pretrial Resource Center, the Association for Criminal Justice Research of California, and the San Francisco Lawyers Club Inn of Court. She has also sat on the Board of Trustees for the San Francisco Mechanics’ Institute, the Board of Directors of the Fresno Dance Repertory and Civic Ballet, as well as the California Lively Arts Foundation.

Mason received the U.S. Presidential Letter of Recognition from President William Clinton in 1995.

Mason was born in New York City.

She is registered as a Republican.
