Biography

The Hon. Thomas E. Stevens is a judge for the Alameda County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2014 by former governor Jerry Brown. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Marshall I. Whitley (Ret.).

He is registered without party preference.

Judge Stevens received his B.A. from the University of California, Davis. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law.

He served a year-long clerkship for the Hon. Edward D. Price with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California beginning in 1994. Stevens then began his legal career in the public sector, joining the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office as a deputy district attorney in 1995.

In 1997, he entered the private arena, becoming an associate at the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom LLP, where he would serve as counsel from 2002 to 2004.

Stevens would then spend four years as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice assigned to their Criminal Division Fraud Section, before joining the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California as an assistant U.S. Attorney in 2008. He spent five years assigned to the USAO's Economic Crimes and Securities Fraud Section before becoming chief of the USAO's Oakland Branch in 2013. He would hold that position until his appointment to the Superior Court the next year.
