Judge Blizzard is a prolific academist. His intellectual pursuit began in 1975 when he graduated cum laude with his B.A. from Claremont Men's College. He would then go on to earn his J.D. from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in 1978. Blizzard graduated with his M.A. in literature from Claremont Graduate School in 1979 and with his LL.M. in international law in 1980. Then, in 1983, he received his M.Phil. in medieval literature from Columbia University. While in law school, Blizzard clerked for the Hon. Joseph A. Rattigan with the California First District Court of Appeal from 1978 to 1979.
After his clerkship, Blizzard moved to New York in order to continue his studies. To help pay for his classes, he worked as an associate at the law firm of Grant, Hermann, and Schwartz for two years beginning in 1980. He also worked as an associate at the Law Offices of Stuart Jackson in New York from 1983 to 1986, and for Greenberg, Cantor, and Reiss for one year in 1986. Blizzard would then move back to California in 1987, where he joined the Sacramento law firm of Weintraub Genshlea Chediak. He would become a shareholder at the firm in 1990, a position he would hold until his appointment to the Superior Court ten years later. During his time in private practice, Blizzard specialized in business and federal litigation, arbitration, and legal malpractice cases.
