Biography

The Hon. Teresa Caffese is a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. She was appointed by former governor Jerry Brown on November 2, 2017, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. James P. Collins.

Caffese earned a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1982. She then received a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1985.

She began her legal career as an associate at Laughlin, Falbo, Levy, and Moresi in 1986.

The following year, she joined the Office of the Public Defender of San Francisco County. During her tenure there, she served in a variety of positions, acting as a deputy public defender, an assistant deputy public defender, a chief of investigations, and a chief attorney. She has been regarded as an expert in cases that involve forensic analysis and interpretation as well as mental competency issues.

Caffese left the Office of the Public Defender and started her own private practice in 2011.

She has been a member of BALIF and the University of San Francisco School of Law American Inn of Court.

She was born in Stockton, California.

Caffese is registered as a Democrat.
