The Hon. Tara M. Flanagan is a judge for the Alameda County Superior Court in California. She was elected to the bench in July 2012.
Judge Flanagan received her bachelor's degree from California State University, Northridge, which she attended on a basketball scholarship. While there, Flanagan's team reached the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Division II basketball tournament. She went on to earn her J.D. from Southwestern Law School in 1998.
Prior to entering law school, Flanagan played rugby for the U.S. Women's Rugby National Team. In 1991, the USA Women's Eagles won the Women's Rugby World Cup and also came in second in the 1994 World Cup. During the 1991 Rugby World Cup, Flanagan was named MVP of the tournament by the London Times.
After graduating from law school, Flanagan began her legal career in solo practice.
She would later leave her practice to join the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, where she served as a deputy district attorney.
Flanagan would also serve as an attorney for the Legal Aid Foundation, a managing attorney for the Self-Help Center of the Superior Court, and a supervising attorney for the Family Violence Law Center, before entering back into solo practice. During her time as a sole practitioner, Flanagan specialized in representing victims of domestic violence.
Flanagan also served as a judge pro tem for Alameda County Superior Court, where she presided over traffic and small claims court.
While on the bench, Judge Flanagan has presided over general criminal assignments.
She has been an active member of the LGBTQ+ community.
Judge Flanagan received a public admonishment in 2017 from the Commission on Judicial Performance for the way some of her 2012 campaign funds were handled.
