Biography

The Hon. Syda K. Cogliati is a judge for the Superior Court of Santa Cruz County in California. She was elected to the bench in June 2018, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. John J. Almquist (deceased). She was named to an interim appointment by former governor Jerry Brown, which allowed her to assume the bench immediately.

Cogliati earned a B.A. in environmental science and politics from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1991. She then received a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1994.

She began her legal career as a law clerk for the Legal Aid Society of Santa Cruz County in 1992. The following year, she served another clerkship with the Office of the Public Defender of Alameda County.

Then, in 1994, she joined Chanler & Associates, where she briefly worked as an associate before becoming an annual attorney for the California Supreme Court in 1995. She then completed a short stint as the legal program director for Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence in 1997.

Cogliati settled into a position as an appellate research attorney with the California Sixth District Court of Appeal from 1998 to 2004.

She then left to return to private practice, where she worked as an associate at Kennedy, Archer and Harray until 2006. At that time, Cogliati started her own private practice as a sole practitioner.

Then, in 2012, Cogliati returned to the California Sixth District Court of Appeal, serving as a senior appellate research attorney until her election to the bench.

She has served as President of the Women Lawyers of Santa Cruz County.

Cogliati has been a member of a Scrabble group.

She is registered as a Democrat.
