The Hon. Susan M. Breall is a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. She was appointed by former governor Gray Davis on October 4, 2001.
Breall earned a B.A. in Italian from the University of California, Berkeley. She then received a J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Breall began her legal career as an associate at Pillsbury, Madison, and Sutro. She left the firm two years later and joined the Office of the District Attorney of San Francisco. During her tenure with the Office of the District Attorney, Breall served as chief of its criminal division, where she was tasked with prosecuting violent crimes against women, children, the elderly, and intimate partners.
Breall created the first Girls Court in San Francisco, California. This is a court that handles all juvenile delinquency cases involving girls at risk of sexual exploitation and trafficking.
Breall traveled to the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1997. She conducted training seminars for the Federation of Bosnian Judges that addressed police investigations, interview techniques, and evidence gathering practices for domestic violence cases. She traveled to the United States Virgin Islands the following year, where she conducted training seminars for police officers on the legal issues affecting battered immigrant women.
Before her appointment to the bench, Breall was actively involved with the National Women’s Political Caucus, the National Network for Battered Immigrant Women, and the National Organization of Women. She has also been involved with the Community Advisory Board of the Alliance Health Project at the University of California, San Francisco.
Breall is an active writer. She has written a crime fiction novel about a San Francisco homicide.
