The Hon. Susan Lopez-Giss is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. She was elected to the bench in 2006. She replaced the Hon. Larry S. Knupp (Ret.).
Judge Lopez-Giss received her B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1971. She went on to earn her J.D. from Loyola Law School in 1974.
After graduating from law school, Lopez-Giss joined the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office in 1976 as an assistant city attorney. During her 30 years with the office, Lopez-Giss helped develop a ground-breaking domestic violence diversion and counseling program that was implemented statewide. She was also instrumental in drafting a domestic violence prosecution manual and has trained law enforcement personnel across the country. Lopez-Giss would ultimately become the City Attorney's assistant general counsel for the legal division of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (DWP). At the time, she held the distinction of being the first woman to reach that position at the DWP. As assistant general counsel, she was responsible for overseeing all of the DWP's issues relating to torts, employment, contracts, regulatory, worker's compensation, environmental and billing litigation.
Judge Lopez-Giss, who is a native of Los Angeles, has been a member of the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center as well as the American Friends of the Hebrew University.
