Biography

The Hon. Stephen M. Pulido is a judge for the Alameda County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006. He filled the vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. James Richman to the First District Court of Appeal.

He is a registered Democrat.

Judge Pulido graduated with his B.A. in political science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1978.

Pulido would work as an attorney and then a partner for Browner, Pulido, and Sheehan for almost twenty years before leaving to enter into solo practice in 1998. As an attorney, Pulido practiced family law and also became a family law specialist. He would remain a sole practitioner until his appointment to the Superior Court in 2006.

He has been an active member and supporter of education within his community. He was elected to serve as a governing board member of the Pleasanton Unified School District in 2003, where he also served as a past-president. He remained on the board until his appointment to the bench.

While on the bench, Judge Pulido served as presiding judge of the Juvenile Dependency Department. He has also served as a supervising judge for the Civil Court, where he presided over a civil direct calendar. In 2017, Judge Pulido made a ruling on a controversial case involving Jahi McMath, whose parents had spent years fighting her diagnosis of brain death after complications from a tonsillectomy. At the time, Judge Pulido determined that Jahi might not fit the criteria of death as defined by the standards of the Uniform Determination of Death Act. His determination opened the door for the family to potentially receive a higher cap on their pending medical malpractice lawsuits.

Some of his memberships have included the California State Bar Association, the Alameda County Bar Association, the Alameda County Family Law Association, and the Alameda County Bench/Bar Family Law Advisory Committee.

Among some of his commendations, Pulido was honored as a Friend of Education for Exemplary Service to Education in California in 2001 and 2002.
