The Hon. Stephen M. Murphy is a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. He was appointed by former governor Jerry Brown on December 24, 2016, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Lillian Sing.
Murphy received a B.A. from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. He then earned a J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1981.
Murphy began his legal career as a law clerk for the New Hampshire Superior Court in 1981. The following year, he joined Bianco, Brandi, and Jones as an associate, eventually becoming a named partner in 1988. Then, in 1992, he briefly served as a partner for Bianco, Brandi, and Murphy before moving to Bianco and Murphy.
Murphy started his own legal practice in 1999. The Law Offices of Stephen M. Murphy specialized in employment law, handling workplace discrimination and harassment cases. He also represented clients who had been unfairly terminated or denied medical leave.
Murphy was born and raised in Massachusetts. His father was a firefighter who worked for the City of Boston.
Murphy is a prolific writer. He has published numerous books, including a mystery novel.
